4 Fun Fall Sewing Projects for Kids and Teens

Fall is slowly making it’s presence known in the Northern Hemisphere- schools start, the sun rises a little later and sets a little sooner, and the chill in the air is undeniable.  If you’re a crafty, creative type, you’re all set to break out the crafting, sewing, creating supplies and spend a little more time indoors!

Here are a few fun projects we think kids and teens might enjoy making.  Let us know if you make any of them, and if you have found any fun projects of your own!

Coffee Cozy

What is a coffee cozy?  A simple little wraparound for any kind of warm drink- hot cocoa, hot apple cider, hot tea, or yes, even coffee.  This tutorial and pattern from Apple Green Cottage is a reuseable version of the coffee sellers’ cardboard sleeve that helps keep your hand from burning from the hot drink you just bought!

Infinity Scarf

Sometimes, as the weather gets cooler, all you need is a little scarf to stay warm and toasty.  This is an easy video tutorial from Debbie Shore for how to make an infinity scarf.  Try flannel for warmth, and because it’s super easy to work with.

Fall Flannel Table Runner

We love this project from Sadie Seasongoods for beginners for several reasons- it uses large individual pieces and straight seams, making it easier for anyone just starting out with sewing, and it allows you to upcycle flannel shirts.  It would also be amazing in denim as well.  What a warm, cozy table topper for fall!

Autumn Leaves Garland

This project from Radiant Home Studio is PERFECT for younger kids, absolute beginners, and anyone without a sewing machine.  Learning to cut fabric with scissors takes time and practice.  Cutting the leaves for this cute garland gives lots of practice, and then putting it all together doesn’t even require a sewing machine.  Basic hand stitching with the running stitch used in this project also takes lots of practice and hand/eye coordination development.
