Aunt Donna Says: 7 Ways Sewing Improves Math Skills

If your child struggles with math or even if they don’t, SEWING, in any form, can train the brain to develop math skills in ways that may not appear as “math” yet increase those same skills in the following ways.

  1. Focusing on the details of a project that has many steps and breaking down tasks into simpler objectives
  2. Using numbers in different ways, like measuring and geometry
  3. Learning how to handle and use measurement tools
  4. Paying attention to and learning math vocabulary, like line, corner, vertex, expand, subtract, divide, count, mark, etc.
  5. The meaning of directions, as with the grain, through the seam, on opposite corners
  6. Understanding concepts of how many and how much
