Easy Burlap Wall Hanging Sewing Project

burlap hand sewing project

Flex your creative muscle with a little hand-sewn picture on burlap with yarn and other embellishments.  This project is a great way for kids to feel successful with hand stitching.  Yarn needles are big and are sometimes dull on the end, which makes it ideal for kids under the age of 7.  A simple running stitch is super easy to make with the large holes on the burlap, and there are so many ways to customize the design.  A heart, star or rainbow would all be super cute and easy to do.

Follow the sewing tutorial below to learn how to make this specific project.  You can also get a PDF version with a link to a TOP SECRET step-by-step instruction video over in the StitchPop for KidsEtsy Shop.  We also have a very early video on our Youtube channel showing our original burlap and yarn projects!

Plan Your Design

  • Draw a design or find a picture you like.

Prepare to Stitch

  • Cut a piece from the burlap fabric 9 by 12 inches. 2. Trace or draw the design onto the burlap with chalk or fabric marker. 3. Gather the yarn, buttons, ribbon, and anything else you want to use to make your design.

Stitch

  • Stitch with yarn, following the chalk outlines you traced. A simple running stitch is easy enough for all young stitchers. If chalk outline gets too faint to see, trace again.

Embellish

  • Sew on buttons.
  • Either yarn or sewing thread can be used.
  • This may depend on whether yarn will fit through the holes of the button.
  • Create fringe on the bottom edge. Optional: sew on lace or ribbon around side edges.

Hang

  • Place dowel rod on back side of hanging, lined up 1/2 inch down from the top edge.
  • Fold the top edge over the dowel rod and pin into place.
  • Using either yarn or sewing thread, hand sew together to create a tunnel for the dowel rod.
  • Insert dowel rod.
  • Cut 16″ yarn piece.
  • Tie to one side of dowel rod, then tie other end to other side of the dowel rod.
  • Find a spot on the wall of your room.
  • Hang and enjoy!
